Lesson 1a: Body Piercing – Check it Out
Context of Lesson: Introduction to body piercing
Learning Objective: Is body piercing always safe?
This is the First of two linked lessons, and sets the scene by introducing the subject of body piercing and demonstrates that most young people are fairly uninformed about the lack of regulation and the dangers concerned with body piercing.
Lesson 1b: Body Piercing – Reducing the Risks
Context of Lesson: Follow on from introductory lesson where risks have been established, this lesson is about risk minimisation.
Learning Objective: Check out what you need to be aware of if you are considering a body piercing, when looking at a piercing studio.
Activities include: letter writing; role play; advice leaflet design; script writing; questions and answers on a visit to a body piercer.
Lesson 2: Piercing Studio Enterprise
Context of Lesson: Introducing a fantasy enterprise to design a body piercing business to reinforce the idea of safe body piercing.
Learning Objective: What makes a good Body Piercing Business?
This lesson can be regarded as an extension activity. It consists of a series of lessons that puts the students in the position of planning a piercing studio. They plan together to work on elements such as publicity, finances, premises and Health and Safety issues. It includes an initial stimulus lesson followed by group work sessions and culminating in a sharing of business presentations.
Lesson 3: Body Piercing the Debate
Context of Lesson: The regulation of body piercing.
Learning Objectives: To understand that people have different opinions and that this can depend on their experience: To be able to see that opinions can affect decision making.
Like lesson 2, this lesson can also be regarded as an extension activity. It returns to the story of Dan and gives the students the opportunity to debate the issues and opinions that are to be considered when legislating for the way body piercing is regulated. It presents students with the scenario, ‘what would you do if you were Prime Minister?’
